Crossing Over

The Ask

Caltech celebrated 100 years of discovery by developing a centennial exhibition spanning six venues across the campus, and was in need of a fabrication partner capable of bringing the sweeping, multi-venue exhibit to life across three distinct thematic sections: The Infinite Lawn, Time Stream, and Powers of Ten. The scope was broad: indoor and outdoor installations, fine art reproductions, custom display environments for three named galleries (the Linde, Gates and Dabney), alongside a full suite of wayfinding and graphic signage spread across the Pasadena campus.

The work had to feel cohesive while allowing each section at every venue to own its own identity. It had to meet the exacting standards of an institution known for inventing precision.

The Solution

Show Ready designed and fabricated bespoke display structures for each of the three gallery sections, working from the architecture of each space outward. Rather than applying a one-size-fits-all approach, every environment was engineered for its specific footprint, materials palette, and display needs.

The Linde Display anchored the exhibit with a 12-foot-wide double radius wall clad in white Dibond, painted steel pipe supports, and a large oval viewing panel cut into the structure for visual depth.

The Gates Display included industrial edge sawhorse-style support tables topped with custom black acrylic, LED-lit angled display boxes, and raw metal light stand fixtures.

The Dabney display brought warmth through natural wood grain, 29 sawhorse-style legs, curved table walls and 12 internally lit display cases with acrylic faces. Across all three locations, materials, finishes, and proportions were deliberately selected to serve the artwork, not compete with them.

The Results

Show Ready handled the full scope in-house — fabrication, graphics, pack-out, freight, and a 4-day installation across six venues by a six-person crew. The result was an exhibition environment that felt permanent without being precious: durable enough to hold up across a multi-week run, refined enough to match the work on its walls.

  • Three gallery environments — Linde, Gates, and Dabney — each built to a distinct material palette and delivered true to design intent.
  • Over 50 fine art giclee reproductions and 12 large-format image blow-ups fabricated and installed across the campus.
  • A full wayfinding system — including 5 exterior freestanding signs, 4 text panels, 2 street banners, and 20 directional arrow graphics — guided visitors across indoor and outdoor venues.
  • Steel, wood, acrylic, Dibond, and laminate all in play — every material selected to serve the artwork, not compete with it.
